Step 1 — Open Vehicle Information app or Parivahan
App: type registration number → 'PUC' tab shows current validity. Parivahan: 'Vehicle Related Services' → 'Know Your Vehicle Details' → look for PUC issue date and expiry.
Step 2 — Read the validity
Petrol vehicle: PUC valid 3-12 months depending on age. Diesel: 3 months always. CNG/LPG: 6 months. New vehicles get 1 year from sale date.
Step 3 — Renew before expiry
Visit any authorised PUC centre (most petrol pumps have one). The vehicle is checked on a smoke meter / tail-pipe analyser. Takes 5-10 minutes. Cost: ₹60-₹120.
Step 4 — PUC certificate is digital
After 2018, the certificate is digital — issued via the Parivahan portal directly. Print or save PDF. Old paper certificates aren't valid anymore.
Step 5 — What if vehicle fails the test?
Servicing required (catalytic converter, sensors, air filter). Re-test after service. Vehicles that consistently fail may not pass fitness — required for FC renewal.
Most lookups in this guide take 30 seconds in the app — no login, no fees.
